Why Do Prices Change?

Why do the prices of groceries, fuel, medicine, and other essential goods fluctuate? Is it simply businesses increasing prices, or are broader economic forces at work?

The Fair Trading Commission’s latest Consumer Education publication, “Why Prices Change: Understanding the Forces That Shape the Cost of Living in Jamaica,” explores six major factors that influence prices in Jamaica: foreign exchange rates, freight costs, inflation, import duties, supply shortages, and competition.

The publication provides practical insights into how these factors affect the cost of goods and services and helps consumers understand the difference between legitimate price increases driven by market conditions and pricing behaviour that may raise competition concerns.
