FTC Participates in Regional Workshop on Competition Law

The Fair Trading Commission (FTC) was recently represented at a regional workshop on competition law, held in Lima, Peru, from August 19 to 21, 2024. Competition Analyst Alrick Livingston attended the workshop titled “Introduction to the Application of Competition Law.”

Hosted by the National Institute for the Defense of Competition and the Protection of Intellectual Property (INDECOPI) and supported by the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development, the workshop brought together new staff from competition authorities across Latin America and the Caribbean.

Participants benefited from expert presentations by representatives from leading institutions, including the National Competition Authority of Costa RicaCADE (Administrative Council for Economic Defense, Brazil), and CCIA (Chamber of Commerce and Industry Associations). The training covered key topics such as:

  • The origins and evolution of competition law
  • Abuse of dominance, including analytical frameworks, interim measures, and challenges in digital markets
  • Fundamentals of merger control and remedies
  • The role of international cooperation in enforcement

Participation in such regional initiatives supports the FTC’s ongoing commitment to capacity building and regional collaboration.  Strengthening technical expertise in areas such as abuse of dominance, merger control, and cross-border enforcement ensures Jamaica remains equipped to address emerging competition issues in a globalised economy.
